snailTHIS MONTH'S TRIVIA QUESTION
We have all seen the tremendous growth in the last 10-15 years, of Charity Races and Charity Runners (Team In Training, e.g., got its start in the 1988 NY City Marathon). Ever wonder how much money is raised with all this charitable running? Take a guess. A recent USATF preliminary survey result shows that approximately how much money was raised for charity in 2002 by American Runners?
a) $250 million;
b) $340 million;
c) $520 million;
d) $750 million.

snailSURF CITY RUN
Congratulations to Mike Bone and his staff at Spectrum Sports for putting on an excellent Fourth of July race in Huntington Beach this year. The new course at the Surf City Run was extremely well received, as was the expanded Expo.

The revised course was much flatter and faster, and took in a view of the beach that wasn’t part of the course in years past. What a concept--a beach city race where you can actually see the beach!

As usual, many of the 3000+ runners and their families stayed after the race to enjoy the annual HB Parade that followed. Next year will be the 100th edition of the parade, so be sure to register early for this one in 2004, and stick around for this rare slice of hometown Americana.

The Open Race ended with a virtual Snail Trail! The top four finishers were all flashing the new A Snail’s Pace Running Club uniforms as they swept to the Finish Line! Congratulations to Johann Appell, Dave Schumacher, Darius Bastani, and Nick Arciniaga who took the top 4 places respectively. Kudos also to four more Snails Dave Parsel, Scott Edgeworth, Joel Guzman, and Josh Hannan who also ran in the top 15.

In the HB Residents race, congratulations to Christine Appell who ran a superb 18:44 for a second place finish among the Female runners.

However, don’t feel like you have to be this fast to be a Snail! Our outstanding Running Club is open to all ability levels and you can be assured that the vast majority of Club Members are indeed snail-like! Ask in any store, or click running club to get more details on ASPRC membership. It’s a great way to meet new people and find training partners.

snailCROSS-COUNTRY
Cross-Country season (XC) is almost here. Many of you XC athletes will want to pick up a pair of XC flats for racing. A “word to the wise”: SHOP EARLY! (Okay, two words!).

Just like Track & Field, special shoes for XC season are not available year-round. Our stores--AND all the manufacturers, like Nike, Adidas, Asics, etc.--do not keep a selection of these shoes in their inventories after the season. In fact, selection is very scarce by the time the season is even half done. Don’t be left out--do NOT wait until you need them, or just before your first race. As they say, if you snooze, you lose!

snailSTORE NEWS
The Pasadena Store Staff and their Fun Runners are participating in the Nike Challenge on Thursday evenings. Store Manager Larry Malig says that the Nike run is temporarily replacing the normal Thursday Fun Run on the Mt. Wilson Trail, but there is no change to the other weekly Fun Runs -- Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Call the Pasadena store for details at 626-568-9886.

Store Manager Rick Herr and all the Laguna Hills Store Staff want to wish the best of luck to their departing summer staffers, Nick Morello and Adam Freeland, who are returning to school as August draws to a close. Stop by and wish Nick and Adam another successful school year.

The Brea Store is happy to announce their 3rd anniversary this month. Store Manager, John Beaver, and his staff want to thank everyone in North Orange County for their support enabling them to become the fastest growing A Snail’s Pace Running Shop in history. Congratulations to John and all his great staff!

The Fountain Valley Store Manager Robert Mignosa expects a big turnout at the local Huntington Beach Distance Derby on August 9th, and wishes to remind everyone that applications for this race and every other local race--and even many out-of-town races--can be found in the store’s Race Information area.
